Guide #6: Adhesive Tiles in the Kitchen – Heat, Splashback, Daily Use

The kitchen makes different demands from the bathroom. Instead of permanent moisture, the dominant factors here are localised heat, grease spatter, steam and frequent cleaning. Adhesive kitchen tiles are very well suited to this application, provided the thermal limits are respected and the junctions are executed cleanly. This guide describes what matters in planning, installation and everyday use.

The Splashback as the Main Application

The area between worktop and wall unit is the classic field of use. It is highly visible, is used daily and can be renewed with self-adhesive vinyl tiles without dismantling the kitchen. Anyone wishing to tile over tiles here gains two advantages: the work is finished within a day, and kitchen operation need not be interrupted. A height of 55 to 65 centimetres above the worktop is recommended so that the surface reads as a closed field and follows the underside of the units.

Heat: The Decisive Factor

Vinyl is a thermoplastic material. It is dimensionally stable over a wide temperature range but loses stiffness under sustained strong heat. In practice this translates into clear clearance rules:

  • At least 10 centimetres of lateral clearance from gas burners and open flames
  • At least 5 centimetres of clearance from ceramic and induction hobs
  • A glass or metal splashback directly behind the hob
  • Clearance from the top edges of ovens and steam ovens, observing the appliance manufacturer's specifications
  • No installation behind radiators or on surfaces subject to continuous warmth

Warm air and rising steam are unproblematic. The only critical factor is direct, localised heat such as that generated at the edge of a gas burner.

Grease, Steam and Cleaning Frequency

The major practical advantage of a closed vinyl surface lies in cleaning. Conventional cement joints absorb grease and grey out over the years. A continuous installation has no absorbent joints; grease spatter stays on the surface and can be wiped off with a damp cloth and mild washing-up liquid. For daily care:

  • Remove grease spatter promptly, before it bakes on
  • Use pH-neutral or mildly alkaline cleaners
  • Avoid scouring creams, oven cleaners and solvent-based products
  • Do not use steam cleaners
  • Use soft cloths rather than abrasive pads

Substrates in the Kitchen

Kitchens present a variety of substrates. On existing ceramic tiles, covering wall tiles is straightforward provided the grease film has been removed completely. On painted surfaces, sanding with 220 grit is required. On emulsion paint, the load-bearing capacity of the coating decides: if the paint detaches in a cross-cut test, it must be removed. Adhesive tiles are never installed on wallpaper, since the wallpaper itself remains the weak point.

Working Around Sockets and Corners

Kitchen splashbacks are rarely free of installations. For sockets, the tile is cut completely before it is offered up. Make a card template, transfer the contour in pencil and cut it out with a fresh utility blade. The socket faceplate then covers the cut edge by a few millimetres, so minor inaccuracies remain invisible. In internal corners the tile is not bent but butted: both surfaces are covered separately and the corner is closed with silicone afterwards.

Junction With the Worktop

The lower termination is the most heavily loaded part of a kitchen splashback. Water, cleaning agents and food residues collect precisely there. Set the bottom row of tiles with a gap of about two millimetres to the worktop and close this joint with sanitary silicone. The joint then stays flexible and can be parted cleanly if the worktop is replaced later. The upper termination beneath the wall unit can remain open or be finished with a slim trim profile.

Planning: Quantity and Pattern

  • Measure the area between worktop and wall unit precisely
  • Do not deduct cut-outs for sockets; they increase waste
  • Allow ten per cent reserve, or fifteen per cent with a pattern offset
  • Check batch numbers and work from mixed packs
  • Place cuts in zones behind appliances

In the kitchen, self-adhesive vinyl wall tiles combine an easy-care surface with a renovation free of dust and downtime. Anyone who observes the clearance rules around heat sources gains a splashback that withstands daily cooking for years. Professional tips for a particularly clean result when tiling over tiles follow in Guide #7.

Related Guides in the Fliesana Series

Besides the kitchen, the series covers every other field of application:

  • Adhesive tiles in the bathroom: wall surfaces above the basin and around the bath
  • Adhesive tiles in the shower: tiling over tiles within the splash zone
  • Adhesive tiles in the kitchen: a vinyl splashback with clearance from heat sources
  • Covering wall tiles: suitable substrates and their preparation
  • Self-adhesive vinyl tiles: benefits, limits and applications at a glance
  • Self-adhesive vinyl wall tiles: technique, care and removal

Anyone planning to tile over tiles will find a dedicated guide for every working step in this series. Adhesive tiles in the bathroom, in the shower and in the kitchen follow the same basic rules, and those rules apply equally when you cover wall tiles in hallways or utility rooms. Self-adhesive vinyl tiles and self-adhesive vinyl wall tiles behave identically: substrate, pressure and perimeter joints decide how long adhesive tiles last and how cleanly you can tile over tiles.
