Guide #10: Removal, Care and Long-Term Durability

A renovation does not end with the last tile. Over the years, care, small repairs and, where necessary, a clean removal determine how satisfied you remain with the decision. This closing guide of the series covers the entire life cycle of adhesive tiles, from the first cleaning to low-residue removal.

The First 72 Hours

The pressure-sensitive adhesive reaches its final strength within the first three days. During this phase:

  • Do not wet-clean the surface
  • Keep the room temperature constant between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius
  • Use the shower and bath only after 72 hours
  • Do not fit grab rails, mirrors or shelves
  • Inspect the surface after 24 hours under raking light and roll out any air inclusions

Everyday Care

The wear layer is closed and absorbs no moisture. Simple means are sufficient for ongoing care:

  • A soft or microfibre cloth, lukewarm water and a pH-neutral cleaner
  • In the bathroom, a squeegee after showering to prevent limescale marks
  • In the kitchen, prompt removal of grease spatter with mild washing-up liquid
  • Regular inspection of silicone joints and renewal once they discolour

Avoid scouring agents and abrasive pads, solvent-based products, aggressive limescale removers, highly concentrated chlorine cleaners and steam cleaners. The latter are the most frequent cause of premature edge lifting, because hot vapour penetrates directly into the butt joints.

Minor Repairs

One advantage of the system lies in straightforward repair. Three typical cases:

  • Lifting edge: Warm the edge to hand temperature with a hot air gun, degrease the substrate at that point and fix it again with the pressure roller.
  • Damaged single tile: Warm the tile carefully, lift it from one corner with a spatula, remove adhesive residues, degrease the area and fit a new tile from your reserve stock.
  • Discoloured silicone joint: Cut out the silicone completely, clean and degrease the joint flanks and re-seal.

For such cases it pays to keep a few tiles as a reserve after installation, stored flat and dry. They come from the same batch and match exactly in colour.

What Extends Service Life

  • Good ventilation, particularly in the bathroom after showering
  • Intact silicone joints protecting the edges of the surface
  • Avoidance of localised heat sources near the surface
  • Immediate attention to small lifting edges before moisture penetrates
  • Mild cleaning agents instead of strong concentrates

Removal: Clean and Without Damage

Self-adhesive vinyl tiles can be removed later without destroying the substrate. This is particularly relevant in rented flats. Procedure:

  • Warm the surface section by section with a hot air gun on a low setting until the material becomes pliable
  • Start at a corner with a plastic scraper and pull the tile off slowly and at a shallow angle
  • Work continuously in one movement rather than pulling in jerks
  • Soften remaining adhesive residues with a citrus-based adhesive remover and lift them with the plastic scraper
  • Finally clean the substrate with isopropyl alcohol

On a ceramic substrate an intact surface generally remains after removal. On painted or filled substrates the top layer may come away with the tile, so subsequent making good should be expected. Metal scrapers are to be avoided in principle, as they scratch the substrate.

Disposal

Offcuts and removed tiles belong in general waste, or at a recycling centre in larger quantities. They are neither construction rubble nor hazardous waste. The comparison is worth noting: new ceramic tiling produces many times the waste mass per square metre, which is additionally disposed of as chargeable construction rubble. Covering wall tiles avoids this effort entirely.

Conclusion of the Guide Series

Tiling over tiles is a mature renovation technique for wall surfaces in the home. The quality of the result rests on three points that run through every guide in this series: substrate preparation, even pressure during installation and the clean execution of perimeter joints. Anyone who masters these three points obtains, with adhesive tiles in the bathroom, the shower and the kitchen, surfaces that last for years, are easy to maintain and can be removed with minimal residue when required.

Related Guides in the Fliesana Series

This concludes a series covering the full life cycle of a tiled surface:

  • Adhesive tiles in the bathroom: wall surfaces above the basin and around the bath
  • Adhesive tiles in the shower: tiling over tiles within the splash zone
  • Adhesive tiles in the kitchen: a vinyl splashback with clearance from heat sources
  • Covering wall tiles: suitable substrates and their preparation
  • Self-adhesive vinyl tiles: benefits, limits and applications at a glance
  • Self-adhesive vinyl wall tiles: technique, care and removal

Anyone planning to tile over tiles will find a dedicated guide for every working step in this series. Adhesive tiles in the bathroom, in the shower and in the kitchen follow the same basic rules, and those rules apply equally when you cover wall tiles in hallways or utility rooms. Self-adhesive vinyl tiles and self-adhesive vinyl wall tiles behave identically: substrate, pressure and perimeter joints decide how long adhesive tiles last and how cleanly you can tile over tiles.
