Guide #5: Adhesive Tiles in the Shower – Working Watertight
The shower is the most demanding area of any renovation. Permanent exposure to moisture meets temperature changes, cleaning agents and mechanical wear. Adhesive tiles perform reliably in this environment once one rule is understood: the tile is the visible surface, not the waterproofing. The build-up becomes watertight through the layer beneath it and through correctly executed junctions.
The Principle: Bonded Waterproofing
Bathroom construction follows the principle of bonded waterproofing. The water-bearing plane lies beneath the covering and drains water forward in a controlled manner. When you tile over tiles in the shower, this plane already exists, provided the existing tiling was executed properly and remains undamaged. Self-adhesive vinyl tiles form a closed, water-repellent visible surface above it. The critical areas are therefore not the surfaces but the edges: corners, the floor junction, fitting penetrations and the upper termination.
Inspecting the Existing Surface
- Are all tiles firmly bonded? Hollow sections must be re-bedded.
- Are the cement joints intact or washed out? Washed-out joints are filled.
- Are there cracks in the substrate? A crack indicates movement and must be assessed before tiling over.
- Is the old silicone joint soft, discoloured or detached? It is removed completely.
- Does water drain cleanly to the outlet or does it stand on the surface? Standing water is not acceptable.
If the inspection reveals moisture damage in the substrate, the cause must be resolved first. Covering wall tiles does not replace defective waterproofing; it presupposes an intact one.
Sequence in the Shower Area
The sequence determines whether the result stays tight. The professional order of work is as follows:
- Clean and degrease the substrate, then allow it to dry completely
- Remove old silicone joints entirely and degrease the joint flanks
- Close defects and, where required, prepare internal corners with sealing tape and slurry
- Set the reference lines and choose a layout that avoids narrow strips in the corners
- Install the adhesive tiles from the bottom upwards so the upper row overlaps the lower one
- Work over surfaces and edges again with the pressure roller
- After 24 hours, form all perimeter joints with sanitary silicone
- Use the shower no earlier than 72 hours after installation
Direction of Installation and Overlap
In the shower you always work from the bottom upwards. Water runs down the wall and meets the butt edges on its way. If the upper tile overlaps the lower one, the water is carried across the edge. In the reverse order it runs into the joint. This detail costs no additional working time yet noticeably determines service life.
Perimeter Joints: The Actual Sealing Detail
Every movement joint in the shower is executed elastically. This includes the junction with the shower tray or floor tile, all internal corners, the transition to the bathtub and the penetrations for fittings. Procedure:
- Prepare joint flanks dry, dust-free and free of grease
- Apply masking tape on both sides for a straight edge
- Introduce sanitary silicone with fungicide evenly
- Tool the joint in one pass with smoothing agent and a jointing tool
- Remove the masking tape immediately while the silicone is still open
- Observe a curing time of at least 24 hours
Around fittings, a sealing collar is additionally recommended. It closes the annular gap through which water would otherwise reach the area behind the surface.
Splash Zone and Limits
Adhesive tiles are designed for the wall surface of the shower, not for the floor of the shower tray and not for areas permanently under water. They are equally unsuitable for surfaces in direct contact with a steam bath, where temperature and vapour pressure lie well above normal bathroom exposure. Within the classic splash zone of a domestic shower, however, self-adhesive vinyl wall tiles are durably serviceable.
Cleaning and Everyday Use
The surface is closed and absorbs no water. Soft cloths and pH-neutral cleaners are sufficient for care. Avoid scouring agents, solvents, aggressive limescale removers and steam cleaners. A squeegee after showering noticeably reduces limescale deposits and preserves the even sheen of the surface. Anyone who observes these points enjoys a shower that differs from a ceramic solution neither in appearance nor in maintenance effort, yet was created without any demolition work.
