Water Leak Detector with Dual Probe – Installation Behind Fliesana Tiles
This detector system is perfectly suited for use with Fliesana tiles and offers a discreet, effective solution for monitoring moisture in shower areas.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Positioning the Probes and Cables
-
Install both sensors before laying the tiles, ideally in the lower section of the shower—e.g. behind the first row of Fliesana tiles.
-
The 5 m cables can be routed along the planned tile joints.
Fixing the Cables in the Joints
-
Use hot glue to fix the cables at intervals within the joints.
-
Press the cable flat using a heat-resistant tool (e.g. metal spatula) wrapped in baking paper.
-
Allow the glue to cool completely.
-
Glue spots every 10–20 cm are sufficient to hold the cables in place until the tiles are installed.
Laying Fliesana Tiles Over the Probe
-
After cable placement, apply the Fliesana tile directly over the sensor.
-
Carefully warm the tile above the probe with a hot air gun and press it down.
-
This creates a small bulge that safely embeds the sensor without affecting the tile’s function or the foil seal.
-
Ensure the probe is placed at least 10 cm away from the Fliesana foil seal (lay out the tiles beforehand to determine the center of a full tile).
Monitoring Multiple Areas
Why early moisture detection is crucial
Water leaks are extremely rare with Fliesana tiles. If they occur, they almost always occur within the first six months after installation. If this period is completed without any problems, the system is permanently watertight – and will remain so.
Without sensors, leaks are often only detected when several tiles in the shower area become loose within a short period of time and can no longer be secured by pressing them together.
The most common causes:
Unsealed wall penetrations for the water pipes near the faucet (as recommended in the instructions and installation video)
Unsealed drill holes for the shower rod (also recommended in the instructions)
Missing silicone sealant around soap dishes or floor drains before the Fliesana tiles are installed (see video "Fliesana Berlin Construction Site")
Repair – simple, quick, and cost-effective
If moisture penetrates, the affected area can usually be completely repaired within 6 hours:
Removing tiles
Use a utility knife to cut through the film sealant in the joints.
Carefully remove the tiles in the lower third or up to half of the wall (depending on the moisture spread).
Drying
Dry the wall and tiles with a heat gun until no residual moisture remains.
Rebonding with silicone
A silicone bead is applied around the entire edge of the tile at intervals of 1–2 cm.
Hazelnut- to walnut-sized dots of silicone are applied to the center of the tile at intervals of 5–10 cm.
The tile is pressed into place, and excess silicone is removed with a rubber joint squeegee.
Curing
After 24 hours, the area is fully usable again.
With the water leak detector, you can detect moisture before the tiles visibly detach – allowing you to react quickly and effectively.
